主要从事被子植物系统进化与细胞地理方面的研究工作,特别是青藏高原与武陵山区植物多样性起源与演化的研究。具体开展了天门冬科黄精族鹿药属的分子系统学及其北半球生物地理间断研究,另外也开展了东亚地区特别是青藏高原和武陵山区一些重要类群的细胞地理学进行重点研究,同时还应用流式细胞仪开展植物基因组大小和染色体倍性进化方面的研究。先后4次到美国访问研究,发表SCI论文48篇,主持国家自然科学基金项目5项,湖南省自然科学基金1项,获湖南省自然科学三等奖一项。
